I think it makes a huge difference being able to read and write and speak...as a child i only knew how to speak spanish while going to school in the states learning to speak and read and write english...like any language reading and writing needs to be taught so, get some spanish books that are easy to read with simple words! colors, shapes, numbers, objects!

I actually have a non-arbitrary question about this...which may or may not be in your realm of expertise, but...

Does it make a difference if the child can only speak vs. being able to read/write and speak?

Erin - thanks for the comment.. Sign language has really blessed a lot of the parents I work with, too - to see their faces when their child makes their first intentional attempt at communicating is overwhelming :) The fact that your three year old is using words to communicate now, even though you did initially teach signs, further proves the point that sign language does not hinder verbal language development! happy tuesday!

I just wanted to tell you that I absolutly LOVE this post! I have 2 kids and pregnant with our 3rd. We signed with both of our kids and omg what a blessing! My kids are 1 and 3 and I feel like they cry less than other kids there age and can communicate more because of sign language. My daughter even at 3 asks me every day what the sign for something is just because she wants to know, she can say the word no problem but she wants the sign as well. My son who is 1 can sign whole sentences, he is so cute when I am teaching him a new sign and he can't quite get it he hands me his hands to help him sign it. Sign language is truely amazing and my husband and I are so blessed we did it with our kids and will continue to do it with baby 3. Sorry this was so long I am very passioniate about signing with babies, toddlers and kids!
