Toys & Activities

I don’t officially endorse or work for any of these companies… These are just a few of the toys and websites I use in my daily treatment of 0-3 year olds :) I am a strong believer that you can use the toys YOU have in your house to stimulate language development…

Ball Drop

Oh my gosh… how all of the little tykes love this toy… I frequently hold the balls in my hands and cue or wait for the child to make a communicative gesture like “ba” for “ball”, “mo” for “more” or use of a sign to request… It’s such a simple cause-and-effect toy that grabs all of the kids attention! [Words I target with this toy include: more, ball, more ball, give me, up, down, ball up, ball down, my turn, I want, counting and colors...]

Barn with Farm Animals

A simple barn with farm animals is great to target animal names, animal sounds and location words.  I frequently with-hold the pieces to encourage the child to request more pieces. [Target words: more, cow, boo, pig, oink, duck, quack, horse, neigh, up, down, on top, give me, I want, chick, cluck, sheep, baa...]

Bubbles

Yup, just your run-of-the-mill bubbles.. They grab the attention of ALL children (especially those with special needs!) and are great to stimulate requesting (ie., “more”, “bubbles”, “bubu”, the “more” sign..) [Target words: more, bubble, give me, I want, pop!]

Puzzles

My favorite are Melissa and Doug, but any simple puzzle with do. Puzzles are great to build vocabulary, request (I with-hold pieces to get “more” or “give me”) and identifying. [Target words: more, give me, I want, and the names of objects pictures on pieces]
